Official Selection: San Antonio Underground 2003, Young Cuts 2005 (Canada) Six characters. Six days. Six ways to die. Just kidding. This ensemble drama paints a melodramatic portrait of high school kids and just how important they are to... themselves. We meet Seth long enough to see him mysteriously disappear, leaving behind a trail of bizarre tricks and clues which increasingly lead to the conclusion that he didn't just "mysteriously disappear". Meanwhile, the five people connected to him- his brother, his brother's girlfriend, his best friend, his former best friend and his big high school crush- spend their week foolishly playing into the game and eventually turning on one another in violent ways. In the tradition of Matt Ryan's themes of people alienating themselves from a world they've grown tired of, Spin 6 attempts to be both dark and stylized in relating the lives of the characters to a constantly spinning record controlled by an all-knowing, unseen figure who can seemingly stop and start events on a whim. It was shot over the Summer of 2002 and was, notably, Matt's first feature outside of high school and funded out of pocket. That lack of boundaries resulted in a 2 hour and 10 minute rough cut that was then whittled down to just over an hour and a half for it's premiere screening at the University of Texas in April of 2003. |
